Sponsored by the Residential Landlords Association
The Residential Landlords Association is proud of its record of support for accreditation that dates back to the mid 1990s when the roots of a successful relationship between landlords and Town Halls began in Leeds. The groundbreaking collaboration, which introduced accreditation for landlords who let student accommodation, turned the city into a launchpad for other educational institutions and local authorities who went on to develope their own schemes.
Now, more than a decade later, the RLA is as committed as ever to local accreditation as part of its belief in self-regulation. Private landlords have to accept their accountability to local authorities if professional standards in the private rented sector are to continue rising. Because wherever consumer interests need protecting there are areas of industry and commerce, serving the public, that require regulation - and our sector is no exception.
But the emphasis needs to be on self-regulation not legislation – with jointly organised accreditation schemes improving standards in the sector as well as relationships between landlords, tenants, local authorities and local communities. It’s only by working as a team, in this way, that these ultimate partnerships can point the way to the most positive future.
Important as it is, though, accreditation is only one of the issues on which the Residential Landlords Association actively campaigns. Others include lobbying for the formal acceptance of a Code of Practice laying down expected standards for professional landlords and a common sense approach to the implementation of Housing Act licence conditions, fees relating to houses in multiple occupation, housing allowance payments, fire safety and tenancy deposit schemes.
The Residential Landlords Association is the leading national organisation for professional landlords, residential property investors and self-managers – with members owning over 100,000 properties in the UK private rented sector. For further details call 0845 666 5000 or visit www.rla.org.uk
